The 5 Skills I Would Prioritize at Age 11–12
1. English + AI → Learn how to learn
Do not compete with AI in memorizing information. Learn English well enough to communicate, search, question and create with AI.
2. Math → Use numbers in real life
A child should understand not only how to calculate, but also when mathematics is useful: prices, percentages, distance, speed, time, probability and data.
3. Science → Think like a scientist
Start with:
Observe → Question → Hypothesize → Test → Explain
Instead of memorizing “the correct answer,” children should learn how to find out whether an answer is correct.
4. Critical Thinking → Don’t believe everything
Before believing a TikTok video, YouTube clip—or even an AI answer—ask:
Who said it?
What is the evidence?
Can I verify it somewhere else?
5. Life Skills → Become capable, not just knowledgeable
By the end of Grade 6, a child should gradually be able to cook something simple, swim safely, handle basic first aid, manage a small budget, use maps, communicate with adults, and solve everyday problems independently.
