Sản phụ khi vào bệnh viện phải được tính PARA. Chúng ta đều biết cách tính PARA. Nhưng chữ PARA có nghĩa là gì? PARA là một suffix trong tiếng Anh, có từ gốc Latin là parere (to give birth). Trong khi ở Việt Nam thì tiền sử sản khoa được tóm trong 4 số PARA, thì có một vài nơi người ta không sử dụng 4 số này mà sử dụng một số chữ có suffix -para để miêu tả tiền sử sản khoa của người phụ nữ.

Nullipara: a woman who has never completed a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks' gestation. She may or may not have been pregnant or may have had a spontaneous or elective abortion(s) or an ectopic pregnancy.

Primipara: a woman who has been delivered only once of a fetus or fetuses born alive or dead with an estimated length of gestation of 20 or more weeks. In the past, a 500-g birthweight threshold was used to define parity. This threshold is no longer as pertinent because of the survival of infants with birthweights less than 500 g.

Multipara: a woman who has completed two or more pregnancies to 20 weeks or more. Parity is determined by the number of pregnancies reaching 20 weeks and not by the number of fetuses delivered. Parity is the same (para 1) for a singleton or multifetal delivery or delivery of a live or stillborn infant.
